Anchor text is one of the most important factors when it comes to SEO. In short, anchor text is a link’s visible text, and for search engine optimization (SEO), one of the most important factors. It is also known as the text that people use to link to a website, and often determines how well you will rank in a search engine.

The importance of anchor text in search engine optimization is that anchor text is a related to how high you will rank on many of the most used search engines on the World Wide Web. People use text, specifically anchor text, to link to the website they are interested in.

Anchor text is also known as a “link label,” or text that is both visible, and clickable in a website hyperlink. The words in this anchor text may or may not be related to the URL text, but will determine the URL’s ranking in the search engine.

You can also use anchor text for the following:

  • Navigation maps
  • As links on your main page
  • As internal links on your pages
  • External links from other sites

Another factor related to the importance of anchor text in search engine optimization is that it gives the user information that is both descriptive, as well as relevant, about the content of the destination of the link-in turn giving the anchor text a lot of weight as far as search engine ranking is concerned. Most SEO experts do not recommend using the words, “Click Here” to designate a link, but rather use appropriate words in the sentence of the anchor link, which will become the clickable link when the user clicks on the link.

Search engines have the objective to provide search results that are highly relevant, and this is where anchor text assists, in that it hyperlinks words that are relevant to the landing page. Make sure your link code is easy and ready for them to insert into the webpage you are linking to, especially if you are requesting links from other sites. Choosing the right anchor text is important, especially if you want to make the most out of a link. Link building comes in various form- you can submit a link to a directory, buy a link, or request a link from another site, but keep in mind it may not be the best approach to have the exact same anchor text in all your links. Also, remember to mix or change words and wording from singular to plural, or add a word here or there, so that your anchor text will vary.

Anchor text gives your web visitors content information of the webpage they are linking to, and it tells the search engine what the page is about. So always remember that words used in your anchor text need to make sense, since not only search engines will be reading your links, but so will human beings!
