Semantic Web
Could Semantic Web be the next Web 3.0? There are many saying so, but more who have never heard of it, or heard of semantic web and never understood what it meant. And there is a reason for that: it’s not simple stuff.
However, it is important to understand semantic web in order to stay in tune with the future of the online world. It was actually first thought up in the early 1990s by the man who created, some say, the online world, AKA Internet world. Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, and HTTP, among other important tools, had a simple idea in creating an online tool for which information could be linked together in such a way that machines can easily process it.
Semantic web is still in its infancy, but let’s be clear on the core idea. The way you see the internet, the way you are likely reading this page, is HTML. HTML is the coded language used to put together words, images, and symbols. A business site has four pages with text and pictures, simple. But it’s somewhat cumbersome when you need a lot of information on those four pages. The idea of semantic web is that information will be easier to get. So far, the movement is going strong, with new tools like W3C technologies, which include XML, and some techniques like XLink.
Semantic web is not for online beginners, and likely not yet strong enough to profit in large amounts from. However, in the beginning I said it may be the next Web movement, Web 3.0. So how would it do that?
By making information less cumbersome you are creating a new way to save time and make money doing so. Say you own a restaurant business with a WI-FI service. What you can do with Semantic Web is make it easier to not only find your restaurant, but to advertise other partner locations in the area. Someone can walk in your door and find out the ten best bars in the area for a late night party. They can make reservations to your restaurant easily while chatting on the phone one mile away. It’s basically designed to be a time saver.
So how will semantic web evolve?
The jury is still out on whether it will be the next web movement, and some ideas have yet to be fully realized. However, it may be too profitable for businesses to completely ignore. You know Facebook and Twitter are big, so now it’s time to rethink your online business strategy (free template).
