Faith is a tough subject to break down for readers, because often each of us has a different understanding on things like God. With so much competition, how does the regular faith blogger compete? One key is ultra-specificity. (more…)

Rich Niche 6: Personal Experience Blogging

Rich Niche 6: Personal Experience Blogging

Posted on 03. Dec, 2008 by Trond.

Surely personal experience blogging is easy … right? Actually, sometimes the stories we have within ourselves take even more talent than the features we research. It’s closer to you, and often the perfectionist blogger comes out. In short, personal experience blogging is about tailoring your views into something positive or negative … engaging the reader with a true life story … and then attempting to get them to return for your next. This guide will show you how to do just that.

Subject Finder:

There are only about a few million stories you can tell. Some of them will interest your blog readers, some will be boring. The true problem is there are no two blog readers exactly alike, so one post may appeal to one while not the other. On the other side, this can be good, because just about any topic will reach someone. One reader hates depression stories or stories of romance … the other is a soap opera fanatic and likes reading about how others defeated depression. So, this means few choices are entirely wrong, just that some are more profitable than others.

War Stories:

“War Stories” of course don’t mean your days in Vietnam or Iraq, but if you do have those stories, a few million of us are interested. War stories simply mean battling major problems, going through a life full of success and failure. You once were homeless … you once battled drug and/or alcohol addiction … you have a major illness. These are all stories which are far from boring. If anything, they’re like creative gold. To write them, you still need a basic storytelling sense. Read up on major magazines that offer such true to life stories of fighting, winning, and losing. Some are faith driven like “Guideposts” while others offer artistic experience like “The Sun.”

Profit Stories:

Another popular field to write in is the “profit story” where you talk like a good old get rich quick scheme … except you’re not asking readers to send you a dime. You are saying, more or less, this is how it worked for me. Wealth is the biggest example, but if you gained anything by making the right choice, from a handsome husband to a newborn son, these qualify. People like to hear about it, people like to read about it.

Jokes:

Sometimes personal experience blog posts come down to telling a joke. You don’t take the world too seriously, you make fun of yourself, and you do it often or occasionally. These posts often form a smaller amount of your regular posting; it’s tough to tell jokes for a living. Yet they can make the reader see a different side of you.

Why write them all?

Why write all these war stores, soap operas, profit stories, and hilarious experiences? You can write on just about any topic you want—that’s the biggest. You will rarely run out of ideas, because all your years and memories continue to grow each day you live. In the end, it’s about having some fun while sharing your world view with readers, hoping your words will affect them, and hoping to they’ll become repeat visitors.

Make Money Online:

Typically, personal experience bloggers don’t entirely focus on themselves constantly, burning out writing dozens of personal posts. However, with such a variety of topics, from depression to faith to even books and collecting, this falls into focusing on select topics. If you focused on depression, offering not only personal experience but also research, you could post Health related ads on your site, or offer to advertise directly to the health providers. Some even become authors, or are already authors, and build an income advertising their books while blogging. The possibilities here, whether it’s passive income ad campaigns or unique paid posting offers, are endless.

Blogging For Yourself: The Creative Blogger at Work

Posted on 01. Dec, 2008 by Trond.

Why blog for yourself?
That is a question I often ask when my blogs are getting few if any readers, turning no profit, and seem to be just another “1 in a million” of the blogs online. Yet there is so much more to this whole idea. Blogging for  yourself is, in so many ways, the perfect creative approach.

Why Not Blog for Profit?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with blogging for profit. Here’s one useful idea. Say you’re an expert on something, but hate talking about it; on the other side, you’re a  novice on something, but you love writing about it. You blog on both. That means you have one profitable blog and one fun blog. It may turn around on you. You may make more money on the personal blog than the expert blog.

Blogging Art:

People respond to excitement in a blogger, or in any writer for that matter. If a freelance journalist hates writing about rock bands, loves opera, then he/she often is better off writing about opera. It may be a smaller audience, but that audience sees excitement. Readers don’t like boredom anymore than bloggers.

Turning Away the Riches:

The idea of turning away riches is somewhat flawed from the outset. The blogging reality is there’s a good chance you will turn a profit if you keep at it. However, by blogging for yourself you put pennies in the bank for the future. You bring in new, receptive audiences to your articles. You don’t dread visiting your fun blog. On many levels, it may help you with the more profitable blogging idea. You may see a topic or two that relates. Or you may just blog on both with one blog instead of two. Blogging for yourself isn’t about following rules and always keeping an eye on the dollar. It’s more about finding an audience and seeing what they like, and then discovering what you like doing in return.

You Write What You Want:

Blogging for yourself is about writing what you want! You like some obscure topic, and no matter what, you want to write on it. Do it! People often talk about writing what they want. Freelance writers … novelists … short story writers … and yes, bloggers.  The best way to write what you want is via blogging. The second, whether it’s fiction writing or essay writing, I leave up to you.

You’re Surprised!

One keyword in the blogging world is again, one blog taking off and the other going at a snail’s pace. Profit wise, one blog is more profitable than the other. Some writers take this to the next level, starting 3 or more blogs. It’s best, especially in the beginning, to stick to two blogs and focus on finding a readership.

Ideas and Details:

The idea of blogging for yourself is much like writing in a journal or diary. You sometimes want to escape it, to rebel and follow the normal rules  of life. After all, bills still need to be paid, kids still need to go to school, or the boss still likes to criticize you. There is another idea, not so far away from the journey of a blogger. It’s the dream where that one blog takes off and leads to not only experience but profit. It’s fun when that happens. And often it does.

Rich Niche 5: Focused Art Blogs: From Theater to Portraits

Rich Niche 5: Focused Art Blogs: From Theater to Portraits

Posted on 24. Nov, 2008 by Trond.

Art blogs may seem big in scope; much like entertainment blogging they need a defined niche. This guide offers several possibilities for art blogging success, from theater and acting to the history of painters.

Theater:

Theater moves. Theater is local. It’s only been with us since the ancient Greeks first proposed acting, so let’s say a few millennia. Theater also is international, sometimes with one play reaching as many or more people than any film ever does. To write commentary on theater is simply about offering a critical opinion. If you’re new to theater, and think it may be a boring subject, consider some of the best films were based on plays, or the best plays were based on great novels.
You can take theater in  a variety of ways, including short news snippets posted on your blog. You can go incredibly focused and review and comment on only local theater acts. The possibilities are endless, and it can actually be quite profitable.

Static Art:

Static art is an all encompassing term used for images that don’t move. Theater and films move, but paintings only move the heart and leave a mark on the mind. It’s a rather general subject, but one with many niches for writing blog posts. This includes using images no longer copyrighted and publishing on your blog, or even paying for the rights to do so with newer works. Mostly you’ll be writing commentary.

Simple, Engaging Commentary:

As always, reviews and news are just the tip of the iceberg. The niches are endless for art blogging success, and it comes down to utilizing every piece of knowledge you get. Once you get experience in the field, it will be much easier to write feature articles and opinion pieces, and more profitable.

Make Money Online Art Blogging:

Art blogging is quite a big piece of the pie, so go for the smaller slices. If you focus on local theater, paintings, and other art, you are immediately choosing a clear, profitable niche. If your blog becomes a success, all the major theaters will want to advertise on your blog and work with you, as will many other artists. Or you can go for more ad revenue via major sites like Google or affiliate programs. The more specific you go, the higher the end revenue will be. After all, Adsense and other affiliates are based on select keywords.
